Gandi Baat...., & Charmme

What gained momentum with Dhamurakam and Naayak had its precedents in Mahatma. For most of our collective memories Ragada’s – ‘Garam Chai….’ was the Charmme’s coming-of-age act. Serving a singular purpose: Instant gratification. From playing lead to ‘item number’ Charmme has come a long way. Err, short way. Coming to think of it, popular item girl(s) got vaporized with mainstream actors getting into their skins. Remember Mumaith Khan’s ‘ippataki inka naa vayusu…’ Now you don’t even get to even see her. We all love these number. Even more when knocked out after couple of drinks. Technically speaking, ‘item girls’ as a character dances to a song and then never appears in the film. There is no backstory to the character. Unless of course you are charting The Dirty Picture course.    Moving on, Charmme’s trajectory as main lead hit breakpoint after few films. With on-and-off hits mostly in south films; punctuated with a two Hindi films Bbuddah… Hoga tera Baap (try hard you’ll remember) and Zila Ghaziabad. Foothold in Bollywood is taking sometime so Charmme is back to what she is good at – item number. So sit back and wait for an aggressively choreographed fast-paced Gandi Baat from R… Romeo. We are all so undiscriminating lovers of item numbers – it’s like going to a strip club. Look but don’t touch.
