For every falling star in Bollywood there is a storywriter somewhere in south scripting a success story

Raja (Ranbir) Ko Rani (Deepika) Se Pyaar Ho Gaya

Achieving popularity is tough and retaining it tougher. No one better than Ranbir Kapoor can vouch for that now. Purely going by ‘Besharam’s’ tailspin at BO. The ascent of the Ranbir is what tinsel town stories are made up of. Tao was simple, experiment early in career and voila you’ve got a success as a way of life and grammar for stardom. Quick were critics and gossip magazines to write hosannas. Then the nosedive. He thought Abhinav Kashyap would pull off a dabanggesque equivalent rom-com. His act of peeing in the mustard fields humming “tujhe dekha to yeah jana sanam…” had the Khan fan bastion shaken. After the film released (and bombed) Ranbir is shaken.

For every falling star in Bollywood there is a storywriter somewhere in south scripting a success story. And this time it is A.R. Murugadoss produced, Atlee directed Tamil movie ‘Raja Rani’. Going by industry reports the movie worldwide collections stand currently at 42 crore.  A good-looking romantic comedy with great taste and modern urban sensibilities. Bollywood needs more such hit films. There is always a market. Karan Johar and his ilk dominated this space till now.

After the rumbustious chemistry of Ranbir and Deepika in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani the maker of Raja Rani wants to cast the duo. Don’t know if Deepika Padukone needs this now - with two back-to-back hits and a Sanjay Leela Bhansali opus up next. No harm if Ranbir signs the dotted lines.

  1. No actor will refuse a good script specially if it comes with good package. Ranbir is, unfortunately, stuck in a web he created. Financially his movies do best when he plays happy go lucky characters with minor shades of grey. Everytime he does something more serious he gets great feedback (who does not like change) but it does not exactly get the box office ringing! Ranbir is very quickly becoming predictable and since Besharam failed this is his opportunity to do something different from the usual characters he plays. It will be a shame if an actor with so much potential does not experiment. Hopefully Bombay Velvet will be it!

For Deepika, she has found a fine balance between the movies that set new box office records and movies that will get her accolades. After all selecting the right mix every year is also an art in itself.
